Moiser Tunnels
The trail where photos were taken is colored red.
This presentation begins in the east and goes west
A Scrub Jay watches us pass
This hike follows a paved road from Mosier, Oregon to Hood River
This old highway and its tunnels were restored a number of years ago
This makes a great hike as well as mountain bike path, so be cautious
Mid-spring to mid-summer is the best time to hike this low elevation hike
In the spring there are alot of great wildflower displays - Fiddleneck wildflower
The road/trail gains a few hundred feet in elevation but gently
At about a mile you come to a beautiful overlook
In the spring the Balsamroot wildflowers are abundant
This is an excellent viewing area - Coyote Wall across the river
You might even catch a glimpse of some Dutchmans Breeches
Looking down on Eighteen Mile Island
Here you catch a glimpse of the tunnels western protective porch
Looking westward and down on the Interstate Hwy 84
Looking back at the overlook area
Catching one of the many river cruses headed east
Looking east past the overlook
Spring display of purple Larkspur wildfowers
Now you enter the tunnel system
There are actually two tunnels but a continuous covering
Looking through the security gate through one of the windows along the 1st tunnel
Looking through the tunnel window at 18 mile Island
Looking through the tunnel window at the freeway below
For safety reasons the area is gated and barred from misuse
Continuing through the second tunnel
A telephoto shot of the old no longer used outside porch/walk area
For some distance they built a protective porch over the road/trail
The cliffs above this area are constantly sluffing off rocks and bolders
Looking back toward the tunnels
Looking back toward the cover area
Another view of 18 mile Island
The half-way point overlook
The balance of these photos were taken in the opposite order
Most of the rest of these photos were taken on a hike from the west end
There is a little pond along the way and this unusual rocky area
I simply placed these photos in reverse order - east to west
It is mostly downhill the rest of the way to the Hood River parking area
Looking north at an unusual rocky point along the road/trail
Looking at the cliff area above the pond along the road/trail
Continuing downhill toward Hood River
Looking back
Another look to the east
Looking east
Another look back
Remember all these photos are facing east
The road/trail continues to descend toward the Hood River parking area
The road/trail continues
